A life in records

Before playlists, there were records. Before algorithms decided what came next, DJs did.

Gene Douglas began his career as a DJ in 1981 in Stuttgart, at the club Perkins Park, playing US soul music. He then played in Baden-Baden, Munich, New York, Cannes, Nice, Paris and Zurich.

In New York, he was introduced to Chicago house music through Frankie Knuckles (DEF Mix), and he worked as a producer for Kult Records, Def Mix NYC and ZYX Records. He founded his own labels: Velvet Records, Midnight House Radio, GD Records London and Almost Heaven Records.

Biography

  1. 1981–83

    Stuttgart & Baden-Baden

    Starts his DJ career in his hometown of Stuttgart and in Baden-Baden, where he quickly becomes known for his US soul sound at the Perkins Park Club and at Griffins.

  2. 1984–85

    Munich

    Moves to Munich, where he DJs at the internationally renowned clubs Charly M, P1 and Maximilian.

  3. 1986–91

    New York

    Relocates to the US for several years. In New York, Frankie Knuckles (DEF MIX Productions) introduces him to Chicago house, which becomes his music. During this time he also works as a co-producer at TTM Studios in Munich and produces for labels such as Kult Records, Henry Street Records, Freebass Records, Soundmen On Wax Records and ZYX Music.

  4. 1992–93

    Cannes & Nice

    Responsible for developing the music concepts of the clubs Studio Circus, Blitz and Whisky & Gogo in Cannes and Nice.

  5. 1994–95

    Paris & New York

    DJs at the Queens Club in Paris, followed by a one-year contract at the club Save the Robots in New York, where he is a resident DJ alongside Super Dimitri of Deee-Lite.

  6. 1996

    Velvet Records · Midnight House

    Founds his first record label, Velvet Records. Creates and hosts “Midnight House,” Europe's first live radio mix show, on the German stations Antenne 1 and Sunshine Live; the show becomes known internationally.

  7. 1997

    GD Records

    Founds the record label GD Records in London.

  8. 1998–99

    Remixes

    Remixes include the hits “Shaft” by Isaac Hayes, “Krazy People” by Nalin & Kane and “Sunshine & Happiness” by Darryl Pandy.

  9. 2000–04

    Almost Heaven Records

    Founds the record label Almost Heaven Records in Cannes. Works as a music designer for La Bodega, Papagayo and Nikki Beach Club in Saint-Tropez. Several Almost Heaven Records productions reach the top 20 of the “For The Record DEF MIX Charts” in New York.

  10. 2005–07

    Zurich

    Moves to Zurich. Works as a DJ and produces a range of CD compilations.

  11. 2008

    Gene Douglas Records

    Founds Gene Douglas Records to bring his past and future activities and labels together under one roof. Begins work on a new album in his studio in Baar. Produces CD compilations and works as a music designer and DJ.
